I checked my iPhone apps and realised that it's not a star but the planet Jupiter.

Actually, the 'being or spirit' that was possessing him was the one who spoke to me.

Have you read verse 102 of chapter 2. البقرة in the Holy Quran?

وَاتَّبَعوا ما تَتلُوا الشَّيٰطينُ عَلىٰ مُلكِ سُلَيمٰنَ ۖ وَما كَفَرَ سُلَيمٰنُ وَلٰكِنَّ الشَّيٰطينَ كَفَروا يُعَلِّمونَ النّاسَ السِّحرَ وَما أُنزِلَ عَلَى المَلَكَينِ بِبابِلَ هٰروتَ وَمٰروتَ ۚ وَما يُعَلِّمانِ مِن أَحَدٍ حَتّىٰ يَقولا إِنَّما نَحنُ فِتنَةٌ فَلا تَكفُر ۖ فَيَتَعَلَّمونَ مِنهُما ما يُفَرِّقونَ بِهِ بَينَ المَرءِ وَزَوجِهِ ۚ وَما هُم بِضارّينَ بِهِ مِن أَحَدٍ إِلّا بِإِذنِ اللَّهِ ۚ وَيَتَعَلَّمونَ ما يَضُرُّهُم وَلا يَنفَعُهُم ۚ وَلَقَد عَلِموا لَمَنِ اشتَرىٰهُ ما لَهُ فِى الءاخِرَةِ مِن خَلٰقٍ ۚ وَلَبِئسَ ما شَرَوا بِهِ أَنفُسَهُم ۚ لَو كانوا يَعلَمونَ

English-Sarwar translation:

They followed the incantations that the devils used against the kingdom of Solomon. Solomon did not hide the truth but the devils did. They taught magic to the people and whatever was revealed to the two angels, Harut and Marut, in Babylon. The two angels did not teach anything to anyone without saying, "Our case is a temptation for the people, so do not hide the truth." People learned something from the two angels that could cause discord between a man and his wife. However, they could harm no one except by the permission of God. In fact, the (people) learned things that would harm them and render them no benefit. They knew very well that one who engaged in witchcraft would have no reward in the life hereafter. Would that they had known that they had sold their souls for that which is vile!

دعاء آخر السنة

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

اَلْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِيْنَ. اَللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ وَسَلِّمْ عَلَى سَيِّدِنَا مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِهِ وَصَحْبِهِ أَجْمَعِيْنَ. اَللَّهُمَّ إِنَّهُ قَدْ مَضَى عَلَيْنَا مِنْ مُدَّةِ حَيَاتِنَا عَامٌ قَلَّدْتَنَا فِيْهِ مِنْ نِعَمِكَ مَا لاَ نَسْتَطِيْعُ أَدَاءَ الشُّكْـِر عَلَيْهِ. وَحَفِظْتَنَا فِيْهِ مِنَ اْلأَسْوَاءِ وَالْمَكَارِهِ مَا لاَ نَسْـتَطِيْعُ دَفْعَهُ.

وَقَدْ أَوْدَعْنَاهُ مِنَ اْلأَعْمَالِ مَا أَنْتَ عَلِيْمٌ بِهِ، فَمَا وَفَّـقْـتَنَا فِيْهِ مِنْ حَسَنَاتٍ فَتَقَبَّلْ ذَلِكَ مِنَّا، وَاكْتُبْهُ لَنَا عِنْدَكَ مِنْ اْلأَعْمَالِ الصَّالِحَاتِ، وَاغْفِرْ لَنَا مَا دَاخَلْنَا فِيْهِ مِنَ شَوَائِبِ الرِّيَاءِ وَالْعُجُبِ وَالتَّصَنُّعِ وَغَيْرِ ذَلِكَ، وَاجْعَلْهُ وَسِيْلَةً لَنَا إِلَى رِضَاكَ عَنَّا وَزُلْفَى لَدَيْكَ، وَمَا قَارَفْنَا فِيْهِ مِنْ سَيِّئَاتٍ وَخَطِيْئَاتٍ وَأَفْعَالٍ غَيْـِر مَرْضِيَّاتٍ وَنِيَّاتٍ غَيْرِ صَالِحَاتٍ بِجَوَارحِنَا وَقُلُوْبِنَا، فَنَسْأَلُكَ اللَّهُمَّ بِحَقِّ ذَاتِكَ وَأَسْمَائِكَ وَصِفَاتِكَ أَنْ تَغْفِرَ الذُّنُوْبَ كُلَّهَا، وَتَسْتُرَ الْعُيُوْبَ كُلَّهَا، وَتَتَفَضَّلَ عَلَيْنَا مِنْ وَاسِعِ جُوْدِكَ الْعَظِيْمِ بِجَمِيْعِ مَا نُؤَّمِلُ، وَأَنْ تُبَدِّلَ سَـيِّئَاتِنَا حَسَنَاتٍ، وَتُبَلِّغَنَا مِنْ رِضَاكَ عَنَّا أَقْصَى اْلأُمْنِيَّاتِ وَنِهَايَةِ الْمُرَادَاتِ.

اَللَّهُمَّ إِنَّهُ قَدِ اسْتَقْبَلَنَا مِنْ بَعْدِ عَامِنَا الْمَاضِى عَامٌ جَدِيْدٌ، مَا نَدْرى مَاذَا سَبَقَ فِى عِلْمِكَ فِيْنَا، وَرَجَاؤُنَا أَنْ تَفْتَحَ لَنَا فِى هَذَا الْعَامِ الْجَدِيْدِ بَابَ التَّوْبَةِ الصَّادِقَةِ الْخَالِصَةِ الَّتِى لاَ يَعْقُبُهَا نَكَثٌ، وَأَنْ تَرْزُقَنَا فِيْهِ مِنَ التَّوْفِيْقِ لِلأَعْمَالِ الصَّالِحَةِ الْمَقْبُوْلَةِ عِنْدَكَ مَا يُوْجِبُ لَنَا رِضَاكَ عَنَّا، وَأَنْ تَعْمُرَ جَوَارِحَنَا بِطَاعَتِكَ الْمَرْضِيَّةِ عِنْدَكَ، وَقُلُوْبَنَا بِحُبِّكَ وَحُبِّ مَنْ تُحِبُّـهُ وَحُبِّ مَا تُحِبُّهُ، وَتُوَسِّعَ فِى قُلُوْبِنَا وَتُؤَهِّلَهَا لِمَعْرِفَتِكَ الْخَاصَّةِ الَّتِى أَكْرَمْتَ بِهَا عِبَادَكَ الصَّالِحِيْنَ، وَتَسْلُكَ بِنَا سَبِيْلَ اْلإِتِّبَاعِ لِحَبِيْبِكَ أَشْرَفِ خَلْقِكَ عَلَيْكَ سَيِّدِنَا مُحَمَّدٍ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ، وَاجْعَلْنَا مِنْ أَهْلِ الْوَفَاءِ بِحَقِّهِ، وَاجْعَلْهُ لَنَا عِنْدَكَ شَاهِدًا بِالصِّدْقِ فِى الْعَمَلِ بِمَا دَعَانَا إِلَيْهِ يَا أَرْحَمَ الرَّاحِمِيْنَ. وَصَلَّى اللهُ عَلَى سَيِّدِنَا مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِهِ وَصَحْبِهِ أَجْمَعِيْنَ . وَالْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِيْنَ. الفاتحة .

END OF HIJRAH YEAR DOA

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

All praises be to Allah, Lord of all Universe. Praises be to Prophet Muhammad saw, his family and his companions.

Oh Allah, a year has passed in our life. You have bestowed on us the Greatness of Your nikmah in which we could never imagine and You have protected us from harm when we cannot detach ourselves from it. We have done deeds in which only You have knowledge of its good or bad.

Oh Allah, if the deed that we have done is in accordance to Your Teachings, please accept those deeds as meaningful deeds in your eyes. However, if those deeds have been accompanied with boastfulness and envy or we have done ourselves wrong, or its intention had been tainted, we seek Your Forgiveness and we implore that You hide all these wrongdoings. Please bless us with goodness and Your bountiful provisions.

Oh Allah, the New Year has crawled in and the current year will leave us shortly. However, we do not know what is in store for us in the coming year. We are ignorant as to where our life will head to. It is our hope that You allow us to begin this New Year with the door of Forgiveness so that we do not end this life in loss. Oh Allah, we plead that you shower Taufiq to us in this year for us to continue to do good deeds that receive Your pleasure and a harmonious life that you bless.

Oh Allah, we seek your Might to safeguard our physical self so that we continue to worship you. Safe keep us so that our hearts are filled with love. Please open our hearts so that we seek you always just like how you open the hearts of those who are righteous. Please place us amongst those who keep to their promises and able to fulfill our responsibilities. Please make our life a witness to all deeds that you have enjoined us to do, Oh Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Giving.

دعاء أول الســنـة

بــســم الله الرحمـن الرحيم

اَلْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِيْنَ. اَللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ وَسَلِّمْ عَلَى سَيِّدِنَا مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِهِ وَصَحْبِهِ أَجْمَعِيْنَ. اَللَّهُمَّ إِنَّا قَدْ مَدَدْنَا يَدَ افْتِقَارِنَا فِى لَيْلِنَا وَنَهَارِنَا مُتَوَسِّلاً بِكَ وَإِلَيْكَ، وَطَامِعًا فِيْكَ وَفِيْمَا لَدَيْكَ، وَرَاغِبًا فِيْكَ وَفِيْمَا عِنْدَكَ. وَقَدِ اسْـتَقْبَلَنَا عَامٌ جَدِيْدٌ تَصْرِفُنَا فِيْهِ أَقْدَارُكَ وَتُحَرِّكُنَا فِيْهِ إِرَادَتُكَ وَقُدْرَتُكَ، وَقَدْ مَدَدْنَا أَكُفَّ اْلإِبْتِهَالِ إِلَيْكَ، وَعَوَّلْنَا فِى مَطَالِبِنَا كُلِّهَا عَلَيْكَ، وَقَدَّمْنَا فِى وِجْهَتِنَا أَشْرَفَ الْوَسَائِلِ إِلَيْكَ، وَقَدْ أَطْمَعَتْنَا مُعَامَلَتُكَ لَنَا فِيْمَا مَضَـى مِنْ عُمْرِنَا، أَنْ تُبْـقِيَ سِتْرَكَ الْجَمِيْلَ عَلَيْنَا وَمَدَدَكَ الْوَافِرَ لَدَيْنَا، وَأَنْ تُبْدِيَ فِى جَسَدِنَا وَقُلُوْبِنَا وَجَوَارِحِنَا قُوَّةً نَاهِضَةً وَهَبْتَهَا اْلأَقْوِيَاءَ مِنْ خَاصَّةِ عِبَادِكَ نَتَنَعَّمُ بِهَا فِى مَظَاهِرِ أَجْسَامِنَا وَمَظَاهِرِ أَرْوَاحِنَا، وَتَهَبَ لَنَا بِهَا انْشِرَاحًا فِى صُدُوْرِنَا وَقُوَّةً فِى يَقِيْنِنَا وَثَبَاتًا فِى دِيْنِنَا وَصَلاَحًا فِى سَرِيْرَتِنَا وَعَلاَنِيَّتِنَا. وَأَذْهِبْ عَنَّا كُلَّ هَـمٍّ وَغَـمٍّ وَضِيْقِ صَدْرٍ وَحُزْنٍ، وَاجْعَلْ عَلَيْنَا وَاقِيَةً مِنْ حِفْظِكَ وَرِعَايَتِكَ تُقِيْنَا جَمِيْعَ اْلأَسْوَاءِ وَجَمِيْعَ الْهُمُوْمِ وَجَمِيْعَ اْلأَكْدَارِ.

اَللَّهُمَّ ارْحَمْ تَضَرُّعَنَا وَابْتِهَالَنَا وَاقْبَلْ تَوَجُّهَنَا فِى كُلِّ أَحْوَالِنَا يَا غِيَاثَ الْمُسْـتَغِيْثِيْنَ أَغِثْنَا وَيَا دَرْكَ الْهَالِكِيْنَ أَدْرِكْنَا. اَللَّهُمَّ اجْعَلْ هَذَا الْعَامَ الْجَدِيْدَ مُفْتَتَحًا بِالْفَرَجِ الْعَاجِلِ وَاللُّطْفِ الشَّامِلِ لَنَا وَلِلْمُسْلِمِيْنَ أَجْمَعِيْنَ وَابْسُطْ فِيْهِ يَا رَبِّ بِسَاطَ رَحْمَتِكَ الْخَاصَّةِ عَلَى عِبَادِكَ أَجْمَعِيْنَ رَحْمَةً يُذْهِبُ بِهَا الْقَحْطَ وَالْقَنَطَ وَالْهَمَّ، وَأَبْقِ يَا رَبِّ أَعْوَامَنَا الْمُسْتَقْبَلَةَ فِى مَسَرَّاتٍ وَأَفْرَاحٍ وَسُرُوْرٍ وَانْشِرَاحٍ نَلْتَقِطُ مِنْ تِلْكَ اْلأَوْقَاتِ صَفْوَ عَيْشِهَا وَنَعِيْمَ أُنْسِهَا. وَاجْعَلِ الْعَامَ الْقَابِلَ مِنْ أَبْرَكِ اْلأَعْوَامِ عَلَيْنَا وَأَشْرَفِهَا، وَاجْعَلْنَا فِيْهِ مِنْ أَسْعَدِ النَّاسِ بِكَ، وَأَوْجَهِ الْخَلْقِ لَدَيْكَ. وَاغْفِرْ يَارَبِّ جِنَايَتَنَا وَتَقَبَّلْ حَسَنَاتِنَا وَتَجَاوَزْ عَنْ سَيِّئَاتِنَا وَبَارِكْ فِى أَوْقَاتِنَا وَسَاعَاتِنَا وَحَرَكَاتِنَا وَسَكَنَاتِنَا. وَصَلَّى اللهُ عَلَى سَيِّدِنَا مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِهِ وَصَحْبِهِ وَسَلَّمَ. وَالْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِيْنَ.

الفاتحة .

BEGINNING HIJRAH YEAR DOA

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

All praises be to Allah, Lord of all Universe. Praises be to Prophet Muhammad saw, his family and his companions.

Oh Allah, we raise our hands to You during the day and night and we seek the generosity of Your Bountiful wealth through your beautiful names and at this time when we are deep in love for You and all love that projects Your Greatness.

Oh Allah. The New Year is near as you how you had planned it be as qada and qadar in Loh Mahfuz. As your creation who constantly seeks your blessings. The coming of the New Year has given us yet another opportunity to raise our hands in prayer asking for Your Mercy. We seek only from You. We seek your continued guidance and knowledge just like how you have guided us throughout our life time. You have perfected our life and livelihood with your bountiful provisions. Please make us, our hearts as well as our physique strong just like how you have given strength to those whom you have chosen. Through this strength, we hope it be guard us against ill doings be it physically or spiritually. Oh Allah Al Mighty, we implore to your to grant us intellectual strength, peace, strength in our confidence, steadfastness in upholding our religion and goodness for ourselves and those amongst us.

Oh Allah, please protect us from anything that troubles us, thoughts that confuses us, experience that saddens us and narrows our hearts. Please safeguard us from all ill doings, harm and confusion. Oh Allah, we seek your Bounty to give what we have sought for, Oh Allah, Lord of those who gives assistance, please help us. Oh Protector of all harm, please protect us from harm and turmoil. Most Gracious, Most Merciful, please open this New Year with success, peace for us and all Muslim brothers who are working in your Cause. Please make the coming years with beautiful experience so that we can taste the nikmat in living. Let us be the happiest people with You. Oh Allah, please forgive us for all our wrongdoings and please accept our good deeds. Please bless our our actions and how we spend our time.

Oh Allah, please protect our country Singapore from harm. Please eradicate any source that may disrupt our peacefulness. Please help us to maintain our country’s peace and progress in your blessings, Lord of all Mighty.

اللَّهُ نورُ السَّمٰوٰتِ وَالأَرضِ ۚ مَثَلُ نورِهِ كَمِشكوٰةٍ فيها مِصباحٌ ۖ المِصباحُ فى زُجاجَةٍ ۖ الزُّجاجَةُ كَأَنَّها كَوكَبٌ دُرِّىٌّ يوقَدُ مِن شَجَرَةٍ مُبٰرَكَةٍ زَيتونَةٍ لا شَرقِيَّةٍ وَلا غَربِيَّةٍ يَكادُ زَيتُها يُضيءُ وَلَو لَم تَمسَسهُ نارٌ ۚ نورٌ عَلىٰ نورٍ ۗ يَهدِى اللَّهُ لِنورِهِ مَن يَشاءُ ۚ وَيَضرِبُ اللَّهُ الأَمثٰلَ لِلنّاسِ ۗ وَاللَّهُ بِكُلِّ شَيءٍ عَليمٌ

English-Sarwar translation

God is the light of the heavens and the earth. A metaphor for His light is a niche in which there is a lamp placed in a glass. The glass is like a shining star which is lit from a blessed olive tree that is neither eastern nor western. Its oil almost lights up even though it has not been touched by the fire. It is light upon light. God guides to His light whomever He wants. God uses various metaphors. He has the knowledge of all things.

The Mufti And The Mayor.

Al-Mawaddah Mosque invited Mr. Teo Ser Luck, Mayor North East District, as the guest-of-honour for their Qurban rites during Eid Ul Adha on Wednesday, 17 November 2010.

I was happy to see Mr. Syed Isa Mohamed Semait, Mufti of Singapore, to be present during the blessed event. I believe that day will be my last handshake with him as Mufti since his post will be handed over to his Deputy Mufti, Ustaz Fatris Bakaram, on 1st January 2011.

What happens when the Mufti and Mayor are present in a crowded place?

قُل أَنَدعوا مِن دونِ اللَّهِ ما لا يَنفَعُنا وَلا يَضُرُّنا وَنُرَدُّ عَلىٰ أَعقابِنا بَعدَ إِذ هَدىٰنَا اللَّهُ كَالَّذِى استَهوَتهُ الشَّيٰطينُ فِى الأَرضِ حَيرانَ لَهُ أَصحٰبٌ يَدعونَهُ إِلَى الهُدَى ائتِنا ۗ قُل إِنَّ هُدَى اللَّهِ هُوَ الهُدىٰ ۖ وَأُمِرنا لِنُسلِمَ لِرَبِّ العٰلَمينَ

Say to them, "Should we, instead of asking for God's help, seek help from that which can neither benefit nor harm us, but would only turn us back to disbelief after God had granted us guidance? Canon in D

I listen to all kinds of music from Classical to Rock to Heavy Metal to Trash. I have gone from all sorts of genres like Religious music to Satanic music. My listening range of music is wide.

I first heard Johann Pachelbel's Canon in D on my walkman player as performed by the London Philharmonic Orchestra. It was soothing and I kept asking why would Pachelbel name it Canon. I kept searching for the booming sounds but mostly they were of violins and bass.

The actual canon is played by the violins over the ground bass. In the beginning, the first violin plays the first two bars of the canon's melody. At this point, the second violin enters with the beginning of the melody, whilst the first violin continues with the next two bars of the canon. Then the third violin commences the canon, whilst the second violin plays the third and fourth bars and the first violin continues with the fifth and sixth. The three violin parts then follow one another at two bars' distance until the end of the piece. The canon becomes increasingly dense towards the middle of the piece as the note values become shorter (first in the first violin, then in the second, and finally in the third violin). Afterwards, the piece gradually returns to a less complex structure as the note values lengthen once more. There are 28 repetitions of the ground bass in total. The canon is relatively simple and does not make use of any advanced contrapuntal devices such as inversion, augmentation, diminution, etc.

The first 9 bars of the Canon in D: the violins play a three-voice canon over the ground bass which provides the harmonic structure.

Paul Mauriat and his Orchestra transformed this classical piece into semi-pop with the rhythmic beats of the drum. This is easy listening for those who find Classical Music not to their liking. You can get all his classic hits on ebay here.

I was surprised last year to hear Yngwie Malmsteen's version of Canon in D. It was loud as compared to the Classics but yeah I can still recognise the music.

When I hear him play, I smiled as this was something of a pleasant surprise. Pachelbel's Canon interpreted by heavy metal guitarist, Yngwei Malmsteen with his electric guitar.

But kudos goes to JerryC's version and played by funtwo who played with his electric guitar as posted in YouTube. It is of no wonder that it has received more than 59,947,393 views!

This year, the students displayed their designs in the Greenhouse at the Stockholm Furniture Fair.

Each students created their specific furniture and showcased them individually.

Be Transformed Or Be Terminated!

Remember those days when you cannot decide whether to watch Aliens or Predators because they were such good movies? You even end up watching both!

Having watched both movies, you tend to wonder then who would be better off against each other -- What if the Aliens were to meet those Predators or vice-versa? So the producers made Alien Vs Predator movie just to satisfy your curiosity and the lust to see the end of humankind.

I watched that Alien Vs Predator movie and it has some logical explanations too. It did prove that humankinds especially Earthlings are weak. Maybe that was why they needed a caped Kryptonian who wears his undies outside to zoom around the globe helping those weak Earthlings in trouble.

I begin to understand that the Predators are not that bad either. They are, if you can say, the good guys in that movie. Now that made me realise that all humanoids are good guys (yayy to Superman!).

So that was the era of The Aliens and The Predators. It made us wonder. Take a mental note that Arnold Schwarzenegger acted in the first Predator movie.

It happened that Arnold Schwarzenegger also acted in the Terminator movies and yes it showed that humans are weak against machines on Earth. It was about the future, so do not bother to call out for Superman as he would have formed the Justice League by that time and Earth is out of his League.

In the Terminator movie series, you see the struggle of one man, John Connor, who wanted to set things right and to make sure that the machines do not destroy mankind. Oh by the way, if you Google for John Connor, do not get mixed up with this John Connors. He is from MicroSoft. Maybe that was where the machines get their Artificial Intelligence?

While we are being marvelled by the strength of machines on Earth, moviemakers now awed us by the strength of alien machines. In the olden days we only think that a transformer is just a small part in an electronic appliance.

As the world advances in various technologies, transformers get bigger.

That's a scary transformer and imagine if you were walking alone and bumped into one of these. You'll be shocked! Pun intended.

Those were the olden days of what a transformer is. Today, the word 'Transformer' has transformed into a new meaning. Ask any child what a transformer is and he would say that transformers are machines such as cars or aeroplanes that can transform into robots.

These robots are from outerspace. Aliens in the form of machines. They happen to be on Earth due to the destruction of their own planet caused by the war between the Autobots and the Decepticons.

Unlike the machines in Terminator series, these alien machines reflect the fight between good and evil, light and dark etc.

Unfortunately, the weaker team is always fighting for the good cause. Do not be hampered if the world thinks that you are a weakling if you are supporting good causes. Carry on with your support. The good machines, the Autobots, would not have succeeded without the support of an Earthling.

I have not watched the new release for the movies Terminator Salvation and Transformers: Revenge Of The Fallen yet. These are good movies.

Why would they release both movies at the same time? Will there be a battle between future earth machines and alien machines?

Rhythm By The Bay

The Co-ordinating Committee of Malay Activity Executive Committees (MAECs) in Aljunied GRC will be organising a cultural performance event show entitled "Rentak Ria Di Persisiran" or 'Rhythm by the Bay' on Saturday, 30th May 2009 from 2.00pm – 7.00pm at the Bedok Reservoir floating stage.

Mr Zainul Abidin Rasheed, Senior Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, MP for Aljunied GRC & Adviser to Co-ordinating Committee of MAECs in Aljunied GRC, will be gracing the occasion as the Guest of Honour.

Other MPs for Aljuied GRC wil also be in attendance.

The event will feature 'live' performances by popular local artistes such as Fauzie Laily, Maiya Rahman, Elfee R Ismail, Shahril Mohamed, Aziz Ahmad.

It will also feature Malaysian artiste Dina (Malaysian Idol)

The emcee for the event will be non other than Shahril Wahid, winner of Suria's Anugerah Skrin. If you are a big fan of the handsome and elegant Shahril Wahid and I am sure that you are, I encourage you to come to the event and watch him on stage again. Who knows he might perform an act or two.

There will also be a Rock Gig featuring 5 local bands such as Walkways, Still Youngz, Sapphire, Nothing in Common and Man & Friends.

I do not know what the fuss is all about recently. It seems that somebody had leaked out private photos of Rihanna in her hotel bathroom naked.

There were a couple of websites showing pictures allegedly taken by an alleged female who looked like Rihanna holding her blackberry taking pictures of herself in a hotel bathroom.

She was with a person who looks like Chris Brown and both alleged lookalikes took saucy pictures of each other.

I stumbled upon it on Twitter when I was following my twitter friends. What else do you do on twitter, duh??

Anyway, seeing Rihanna naked is what I have always been used to. I have even taken pictures of her not under her umbrella but underwater.

This is now my golden opportunity to expose the naked Rihanna in this blog.

Mom's The Word.

My aunt passed away a few months ago. She was my mom's younger sister. Now my cousins have lost both of their parents.

There has been a couple of deaths in our families and us cousins are like prepared for what to do or are ready for what the outcome would be if any of the elders were brought to the hospital.

I love my relatives and as we grow up (note that I'm not using the phrase grow older), we began to understand each other's character and behaviour. Excuses for the lacking of understanding of an act or behaviour are easily given in such great details by those who really have observed us.

I was surprised that an in-law of my cousin whom I was a classmate in our religious studies, was able to understand my character. How did he see it through the wall that the others (my friends) say surrounds me?

There IS no wall. In fact, I am the most approachable individual that I know of. The wall exists to those who think there is a wall.

Amongst cousins, we communicate freely. We send text messages and even emails. We even look into each of our Facebook accounts!

It was around last month when I received an email from my cousin with an attachment. It shows a family picture of our moms with our grandpa. An old black and white picture in the 40s. A group portrait of my granddad with his children. I do not see my grandma. Probably she was the one taking this photograph!

Hahaha ... There was no such thing as an autofocus digital camera at that time and cameras really look like those movie cameras that they use to shoot films. I cannot imagine my grandma to be able to shoot this shot hahaha.

From what I recall of what my mom had told us, this picture was taken in Singapore and I do not know why the ladies were wearing sarees.

This picture might be taken during a celebration, maybe the Eid and since my great great grandmother was from Kabul, Afghanistan, my grandma would have dressed her daughters in sarees.

My mom was the one in white. My youngest uncle was not born yet when this picture was taken. He is still alive and doing well, alhamdulillah.

Unfortunately, everyone in this picture had passed on except that youngest and smallest child you see in this picture. He is now a retired school teacher.

I missed my mom, my aunts and my uncle. This picture that my cousin sent us reminded me of our upbringing. We are a poor family. My uncles, aunties and mom suffered much.

My mom sacrificed a lot to bring up her children. I remembered her waiting outside the principal's office of my school to collect our bursary money and then she would straight away rush to buy groceries.

I remembered her asking me what I had done with the money that she gave me. I was a kid. Did I spend it on sweets and candies? I cannot recall now but what I can remember was that I got 25 cents each day and it took me 2 weeks to repay the 5 cents that I borrowed from a friend.

Nothing can repay what our moms had done!

In memory of my mom I play this song from her favourite singer and may Allah place her in the company of saints.

The Beijing 2008 Olympic Games is ending soon.

Somehow I got turned off by the word 'Beijing' eversince SPG went there on the pretext of spending her-quarter-of-a-century-birthday on a trail to find her Chinese Islamic roots in some parts of mainland China away from Beijing.

Days before her trip, she hassled me for $7000 which was a sum I totally rejected due to the fact that I knew her evil plans. It was not about finding her roots. It was not about finding Islam. It was something else and it has to do with her Drunkard Ang Moh Lover.

I do not know how she tricked her family and friends but they stupidly lent her that amount for her trip. The keyword here is 'LENT'. She stressed that she knows nobody there and will be ALONE in a big land.

Anyway, she spent 2 weeks with that guy on a wild trip. She shouted at me when I called to find out how she was doing 'all alone in China' and whether she had found her roots.

No, she did not find her roots.
No, she did not do anything significant of Islamic values.

She came back home and called me for some money to pay her medical bill. She had some infections in her private parts. She blamed the water of China that caused her infections.

So do all ladies in China suffer from the same ailment as she?

Last year, she came back from KUL suffering from the same infections in her private parts after spending 3 nights 'secretly' with her DAML. I paid for her medical bill.

I'm an adult. I knew what had happened and kept quiet.

That Drunkard Ang Moh Lover of hers must have enjoyed his stay in Beijing!
He struck gold.

Hence, the word 'Beijing' turned me off and it was painful for me to watch the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games.

But I sure am proud of Michael Phelps for his eight Gold Medals that he won. He beat Mark Spitz's record of winning seven Gold Medals in Swimming.

Let me rephrase my question ... How many of you KNOW this song? :-)

It's an evergreen and has been around since my childhood days when I was running around the kampung bushes looking for spider Kang or spider Boon.

This is not a history lesson on spiders, so go figure what I meant ... hehehe ;-)

This song has its impact on me and I would like to share this with the one person who thinks that I do not know that she reads my blog.

FIFA08 - Young Folks.

It's the last day of the first month. This is MY birthmonth :-)

Like last year, nothing special happened on my birthday even though there was someone special with me at that time :-(

That was the past. This time, my present special someone had no opportunity to celebrate my special day as I had not revealed to her yet. I categorised her as special eversince we decided that our relationship to be as such and that is all.

Hahaha ... I still do not know what is so special about our relationship!

Maybe I was afraid that I would get hurt or that I would hurt her feelings instead.

But hey .... last year I got presents for my birthday from someone I helped even though we knew each other for a few days. I have lost contact with her eversince SPG became jealous even though her Ang Moh lover and her rich dentist Ah Long are always with her. Hmmm .... I'm starting to miss her (my girl acquaintance).

Whatever it is, the past is the past and I AM MOVING ON.

If only there were someone special that I could really categorise as SPECIAL, who happens to cross my path, I would be asking her lots and lots of questions.

The Day Of The Year That Time Flu Bye.

It was the last day of the Hijrah Calendar and I was so looking forward to this day. The day before that day, I was not feeling well but thought that I would feel better the day after.

My nose was not giving me its support and it kept me busy. Busy running looking for tissue paper or running towards the bathroom sink. During that time, it kept me wondering why this situation is known as to be having a running nose when it was I who have been running around.

After much running and blowing my trumpet in the bathroom without even thinking of what the neighbours would react to my not-so-proper and appetising call for the morning 'chendol', I looked into the mirror and beheld the truth.

It was the last day and my nose just blew my spirits away. Maybe it was seeking revenge at me who has been blowing its contents for the past three days. Yes, I have been putting up to the flu bug for the past three days and the level of my patience has gone high up to my nose.

If it were Christmas that day, Santa would have mistaken me for Rudolph. But it was not Christmas. It was the last day of the Hijrah 1428 and I was really really really looking forward to the observance ceremony at the neighbourhood mosque.

I was yearning and wanting to see Ustaz Mohamed Fatris Bakaram who is the Vice-Mufti of Singapore and Ustaz Jamaluddin Abdul Wahab who is the Executive Imam of Darul Ghufran Mosque. Both of them would be giving sermons and the event would include reading of the Do'a Akhir Sannah and Do'a Awwal Sannah.

So I made a last effort to overcome this unpredictable predicament. I rushed to the clinic to get medication and hopefully a swift cure to my ailment. This was what I received.

The doctor had prescribed me medications for my flu and sore throat. I was sternly told not to go to the office and was given one day sick leave!

Subhanallah! Was I really not well? You know what? The doctor was correct in her diagnose of my health condition.

I was having the worst fever by the time Maghrib arrived and if I had attended that gathering, I would have disrupted the Majlis.

Alhamdullillah .... Allah gives and takes what ever that belongs to Him anytime and whenever He wishes.

Ma'al Hijrah!

اَللَّهُمَّ إِنَّهُ قَدِ اسْتَقْبَلَنَا مِنْ بَعْدِ عَامِنَا الْمَاضِى عَامٌ جَدِيْدٌ، مَا نَدْرى مَاذَا سَبَقَ فِى عِلْمِكَ فِيْنَا، وَرَجَاؤُنَا أَنْ تَفْتَحَ لَنَا فِى هَذَا الْعَامِ الْجَدِيْدِ بَابَ التَّوْبَةِ الصَّادِقَةِ الْخَالِصَةِ الَّتِى لاَ يَعْقُبُهَا نَكَثٌ، وَأَنْ تَرْزُقَنَا فِيْهِ مِنَ التَّوْفِيْقِ لِلأَعْمَالِ الصَّالِحَةِ الْمَقْبُوْلَةِ عِنْدَكَ مَا يُوْجِبُ لَنَا رِضَاكَ عَنَّا، وَأَنْ تَعْمُرَ جَوَارِحَنَا بِطَاعَتِكَ الْمَرْضِيَّةِ عِنْدَكَ، وَقُلُوْبَنَا بِحُبِّكَ وَحُبِّ مَنْ تُحِبُهُ وَحُبِّ مَا تُحِبُّهُ، وَتُوَسِّعَ فِى قُلُوْبِنَا وَتُؤَهِّلَهَا لِمَعْرِفَتِكَ الْخَاصَّةِ الَّتِى أَكْرَمْتَ بِهَا عِبَادَكَ الصَّالِحِيْنَ، وَتَسْلُكَ بِنَا سَبِيْلَ اْلإِتِّبَاعِ لِحَبِيْبِكَ أَشْرَفِ خَلْقِكَ عَلَيْكَ سَيِّدِنَا مُحَمَّدٍ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ، وَاجْعَلْنَا مِنْ أَهْلِ الْوَفَاءِ بِحَقِّهِ، وَاجْعَلْهُ لَنَا عِنْدَكَ شَاهِدًا بِالصِّدْقِ فِى الْعَمَلِ بِمَا دَعَانَا إِلَيْهِ يَا أَرْحَمَ الرَّاحِمِيْنَ. وَصَلَّى اللهُ عَلَى سَيِّدِنَا مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِهِ وَصَحْبِهِ أَجْمَعِيْنَ . وَالْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِيْنَ. الفاتحة .

I am guilty of torturing myself emotionally. Things would have been different if I had listened to my mind.

My heart, so fragile and kind, had been manipulated. It is not thinking straight. I do not blame it as it is not created to think.

But I do feel correctly and I know what I feel.

I laugh at jokes. I hum tunes that remain stuck in my head. I feel sad when it's appropriate to feel sad. I do get angry but it is within my control.

Being human, I am a human being.

Alhamdulillah ... I seldom get angry nowadays. I supposed that I am too hurt to feel angry.

There are things that my mind will not comprehend what my heart whispers to me in a voice so sullen that cold air flows through my veins making me shiver.

Yes ... My heart is telling me to let go. My mind thinks the otherwise. It's quite the opposite of what others usually encounter.

But what my heart is telling me really makes sense. I have to let go and make the place available for that somebody to settle in.

Who is that somebody? I do not know and Allah is the Knower of all things.

The answer came to me half-asleep, half-awake, half-alive and half-dead.

This is a beautiful song. It keeps haunting me day and night.

But I still think that Alicia's intonation or pronounciation of certain words are not that clear.

She needs to improve on her articulation. The first time I heard this song, I was wondering why she said "I want you so" or was it "I want you nose"

There is this someone out there close to me who has this low self-esteem about her appearance. To me she is really beautiful and has a nice figure too.

Unfortunately, she does not believe me and will not accept what I have been telling her.

Too bad, she does not read this blog but if by perchance she happens to step afoot here, she would realise that she is not the only girl having this thinking about oneself.

The Turning Point.

I'm just going to rattle at this point. So if you find it boring, go ahead read this lying down and perhaps you have found the cure to your insomnia.

I cannot say that life is on the downhill for me. It's an uphill task at the moment. Physically, alhamdulillah, I'm healthy. This reminds me that I need to do a crowning for my upper incisor. I cracked it on the 2nd day of Ramadhan and had it fixed after two weeks of suffering. The dentist advised me to do a crowning and that will cost me at least $500/-

Emotionally, I am hurting. Hurting for two reasons.

My mom passed away peacefully within 24 hours of her suffering. She had a heart failure that caused her internal organs to stop functioning. It is painful to let go but I had to let go. I've accepted her departure and moved on. Let us recite Surah Al-Fatiha and may the rewards be channelled towards her soul.

I remember that it was on the second day after the burial, I was surprised that my hotmail account had been hijacked. I have not been using hotmail for a long long time but I do go into it as my bank sends email to that old account. I am glad that I no longer owe any BANKS money. My Bank account is cleared of debts.

But I was curious to know what my Bank would send me after I settled my account 4 months ago. That was when I discovered that my hotmail had been hijacked!

Spent like 45 minutes resetting my password, worried that I can no longer have access to my hotmail and also my MSN account.

Having signed into both automatically after resetting the password which is ********* , a message came through.

It was from a friend whom I have not chatted since I left the airport. SN nudged me and I was playful in my replies to her. She asked me about how I was coping with my ex girlfriend and somehow she joked about wanting to be my special someone.

I created a poem in reply -->

Can you find a way into my heart?
Can you heal the pain I'm having?
Can we not be far apart
Always away and leaving?

The first two lines refer to SN and the last two to SPG.

I have not let go of my ex girlfriend and will not be able to accept someone else .... yet.

SN knows nothing of what the poem meant. She kept SMSing me after we logged off MSN and that was nearly 2.30am. I had given her my number even though I have not been giving away my new number to anybody apart for my family and SPG. The SMS stopped 2 days later since I did not reply.

The next day, I got a shock that she blogged about me. She stated that she was surprised that I, being a person of my age (meaning old) would miss my mom.

That was so wrong. I got over her departure but I do still miss her. Age has nothing to do with missing someone. Where does it state that only young kids can miss their mom? I've known her for all my life. I have the right to miss her and missing her I shall always be. Fullstop.

There goes her hopes of hitching me!

The next hurting moment was/is with SPG. She keeps hurting me emotionally. The confusion in feeling hurt healed part of both.

My mom's death healed my hurting feeling caused by SPG and SPG's anger healed my feelings about my mom's death. For a sweet 3 weeks my life changed!

This Counselling Psychology works!

I was able to focus. I AM in focus and that made SPG see the change in me. She kept calling me and realised that I am a different person.

That was my BIGGEST mistake .... Accepting her back into my life.

Is it wrong to surprise someone whom you love by being outside the dentist when she is having her wisdom tooth extraction?

It is wrong according to SPG. I know why.

She told me not to come (although I came) to the dentist.

When I arrived at the dentist, outside waiting for her was her Ang Moh lover!!!!!

Thus, I am now hurting.

That's the story for now. There will not be any updates about SPG as it is a private and personal matter.

There will be other things to blog about, though.

By the way, I believe Dr. Frederick Toke or his associates are reading this. Thank you!

Yeah ... I've been busy.

I've been pouring over pages and pages of different books trying to be on top of the class and maybe trying to impress my Professor, Dr. Frederick Toke.

But then, what really motivated me?

I recently analysed myself. I am a perfectionist having a mild Type A personality driven by emotions.

But hey ... I am a chess player and I do not rush on my moves even though there is only that particular effective move to make. I would linger and wait for the very comfortable minute to strike.

Yup ... that's me.

Au contraire ... someone called me 'WEIRD' recently and that spurred me to move on really fast.

I do not do things out of Anger. I am a very patient man. When I am angry, I know that I am angry and am able to control my actions.

It is Pity that moved me, not Anger. I am easily moved to tears when empathy takes over.

Hmmmm .... did I not learn anything from my Transactional Analysis class?

Anyway, things are different now.

My goals have changed.

The Night of Power; The Power of Medication.

I am a person who does not go to the doctor unless necessary and I do not pop pills without any valid reason.

It has been two days that I have been taking Panadol for Sahur and Iftar daily just to relieve this suffering my physical self is experiencing. I was having runny nose with sore-throat and some pains at the joints.

So last Friday, I decided to visit the family clinic. I have this feeling that I am having a fever. It was a HOT day and yet I was shivering!

True enough, Dr. Rajini confirmed that I have a high temperature and prescribed me the medication you see above. O yah ... She gave me two days of medical leave ... hehehe.

I reached home around 4pm and waited patiently for 7.01pm. Three more hours to pass by until I can take my PARACETAMOL. I was in great pain.

Anyway, bla bla bla bla .... I survived the wait and took my medication immediately after iftar.

Performed my Maghrib prayers as usual. Having finished that, I began to feel drowsy. I was feeling the effects of the pills that I took.

I was still in pain with fever followed by drowsiness so I decided to take a nap and do my Isya' and Terawih prayers late at night.

I woke up at 12.30am feeling disoriented and light-headed.

I then performed my Isya' prayers followed by the Terawih.

I felt comfortable during the prayers. No runny nose. No sneezes. No sore-throat. No headaches. No muscle pain. It was the most peaceful and relaxed Terawih prayer that I have performed so far yet this Ramadan.

I was rather amazed at the situation. I checked the calender and realised that it was the 17th day of Ramadan. The day the Quran was brought down. The day some muslim scholars say is when the Night of Qadr or the Night of Power was to happen.

If you experience such a thing and you were alone. What would you have done? That's right, share it with someone you love or at least someone whom you have been close to.

That was what I did. I messaged that someone about my experience happily telling her what happened. Of course, she did not reply as she was fast asleep after getting home late.

Well ... I thought the story ends there. I just wanted to relate what I had experienced and close the case.

Never did it come into my mind that an Ustaz condemned me as "riak, arrogant and proud."

My SMS was forwarded to this ulama' and he instantly condemned me! The best part was that I do not know who he is and he has not spoken to me.

Okay ... I am fasting.

I'm just saddened that the person I wanted to share things with did not even talk to me about my SMS but instead sent it around.

What's happening to the Ummah?

She HATED me now. What did I do?

May Allah help me to help her. Ameen.

I had forgotten all about him but my mom recognised him on tv when he made a cameo appearance in a Malay drama as himself singing this song in a charity event.

The song touched me.
Yeah ... guys do cry too and it takes a BIG guy to admit that :-)

Anyway, my sentiments to Nash and may his rocky marriage stabilise in this blessed month of Ramadhan.

Hmmm ... it seems that Nash is not the only person in this rocky situation.

I was just told two days ago about another similar incident. I shall let this be kept a secret.

Ibrahim Ibn Adham

A man came to Ibrahim ibn Adham (May Allah be pleased with him) and said, "Abu Ishaq, I am unable to control my lower self. Please give me something to help me with it."

Ibrahim answered, “If you accepted five traits and were able to do them, you would not commit any bad deed again. The first one is if you want to disobey Allah, do not eat from His bounty.”

The man said, “So where can I eat from and all the earth belongs to Him?”

Ibrahim answered, “Is it right to eat from His bounty and disobey Him?”

The man said, “No. Tell me the second.”

Ibrahim said, “If you want to disobey Him, do not live in any of His lands.”

The man said, “This is harder, so where else can I live?”

Ibrahim said, “Is it right to eat from His bounty, live in His lands, and then disobey Him?”

The man denied and asked for the third.

Ibrahim said, “If you want to disobey Him while you eat from His bounty and live in His lands, then disobey Him in a place where He cannot see you.”

The man said, “How? He even knows what is going on inside my head?”

Ibrahim answered, “So, can you eat from His bounty, live in His lands, disobey Him while He sees you and knows what you want to say and what you have kept secret to yourself?”

The man said “No” and asked for the fourth.

Ibrahim said, “If the angel of death comes to take your soul, tell him ‘Leave me till I repent and do good deeds.’”

The man said that he would not accept and Ibrahim replied, “If you cannot escape death and know that if it comes it will not be delayed, how can you wish to be saved?”

The man asked for the fifth and Ibrahim continued, “If angels of torment come to you on the Day of Judgment to take you to Hell, do not go with them.”

The man said, “They will not let me go.”

Ibrahim replied, “So how do you wish to be rescued, then?”

And the man responded, “Ibrahim, enough, enough! I will repent to Allah.”

His repentance was a true one and he kept worshiping till the end of his life.

Under The Weather And Emotionally Down.

It was a day remembered by History and it was a day to be remembered by us.

My special someone had been on Medical Leave for two days. Before I left for the Community Centre, I text her some encouraging words.

It was raining heavily in the morning and I made use of the weather to text her. I had taken a snapshot of the sky from my balcony with my N95 and created a picture message.

However, it saddened me that my effort was not noticed. So I had to call her and then I realised the horrible truth.

No! Osama did not repeat history!

The horrible news was that somebody had stolen her valuables while she was busy.

These include her wallet which contained her NRIC.

That was not all.
They had taken the N95 which I bought for her.

No wonder she did not reply my MMS.
She did not receive it.

Anyway, this was what I had sent her.

Sayang ... If you read this, considered my MMS went through.

The holidays are here and as usual the house is full of nephews and nieces.

I was rather puzzled the next morning when I saw my nephew, the Maths Genius, looking so glum alone in the room and staring at the computer screen.

He was looking at a webpage of Sony PSP.

I let him have his privacy and left the house for some errands.

When I returned, this was what I saw on the fridge.

Subhanallah!

He did all these by himself?

His mom confirmed that she did not help him.

Associate Professor Karim Douglas Crow
Karim Douglas Crow is Associate Professor at the Institute of Defence and Strategic Studies (IDSS), Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, where he is a researcher & teaches on Contemporary Islam.

Born and raised in Beirut of Lebanese+American parentage, professor Crow took his university education in Beirut and Cairo, and his Doctorate from the Institute of Studies Islamic at McGill University.

During 1980–1992 he taught Islamic Studies and Arabic Language & Literature at: Columbia University, New York University, Fordham University, The University of Virginia, and the University of Maryland.

In 1999 & 2000–2005 he served as Professor of Islamic Thought teaching philosophy, theology and intellectual traditions at the International Institute of Islamic Thought and Civilisation (ISTAC) in Kuala Lumpur.

He has published articles and book chapters on Islamic metaphysics, contemporary Islamic intellectual & spiritual currents, Islamic peace studies, and values & ethics; and an edited volume Facing One Qiblah: Legal and Doctrinal Aspects of Sunni and Shi‘a Muslims (Singapore, Pustaka Nasional, 2005).

He has conducted research for many years on Islamic understandings of intelligence+reason, and his textual study of tradition history ‘When God Created Wisdom’: Islamic ‘Aql Creation Narratives is under consideration by Brill Publishers.

Dutch Bishop wants Christians to call God 'Allah'

"Allah is a very beautiful word for God. Shouldn't we all say that from now on we will call God 'Allah'?" asked Bishop Martinus Petrus Maria Muskens in an interview on Dutch TV this week. "God doesn't care what we call him."

Muskens, the Roman Catholic Bishop of the southern Dutch town of Breda, is known for previous controversial remarks suggesting the poor should steal bread and advocating the use of condoms to control the spread of AIDS.

As quoted by Radio Netherlands three decades ago, when serving as a missionary in Indonesia, "someone like me ... prayed to Allah yang maha kuasa [Almighty God] for eight years and other priests [did so] for 20 or 30 years. In the heart of the Eucharist, God is called Allah over there, so why can't we start doing that together?"

The bishop further noted that in Arabic-speaking regions, Christians speak of "Allah" as Westerners might speak of "Lord," and indeed were using the term in Aramaic before the rise of Islam.

But why the need for the switch now?

"If Muslims and Christians address God with the same name, this contributes to harmonious living between both religions," read a statement on the Web site of the Breda Diocese.

The diocese is careful to note that "the idea of calling God 'Allah' in the Catholic liturgy in the Netherlands has not been discussed as a component of diocesan policy, or as a policy of the Dutch [Catholic] Church."

It seems that they have yet to find the true meaning of 'God'. The English meaning describes the Creator as a male species (God) or a female species (Goddess) and has the implications of many Gods. A supreme Being should be One Being and has no equal.

Such is the beauty of the Arabic language that Allah signifies Oneness, a Unique Being -- The God

The Elegant Hijab

The pea is a splendid plant. It proudly displays its strong green Hijab. Which protects it from the hot and cold weather and guards it from insects. Allah has blessed the pea with a special Hijab, because without it, the seeds would scatter, dry up and die.

The orange keeps itself within its shiny orange Hijab to protect its delicious fruit. Otherwise it loses its taste too.

So are the banana, the coconut and the pomegranate. Each one has an elegant and unique Hijab, which protects it from disease and destruction.

The jewel of the sea, the pearl, has been given a very tough and rugged Hijab - oyster shell. It protects it from sea animals and keeps it sparkling and shining inside.

However, the most beloved of Allah in all His creation is the Muslim girl who wears the Hijab. She knows it is a gift from Allah. It protects her from harm, injury and mischief. She wears it knowing it gives her dignity, beauty and respect. So precious she can be that she hides herself beneath her Hijab.

‘The Significance of Rejab’

In the history of Islam, there were special events which took place and which we should commemorate for the purpose of drawing lessons from them. As Muslims, we know and believe that such events took place because of the wisdom of Allah, to serve as a guide for us and for the future generation of Muslims.

It was the event of Israk and Mikraj, which took place on the 27th day of Rejab (621 C.E.) and which saw the Prophet's journey by night from Makkah to Jerusalem and his ascension thereafter to the Throne of Allah. The event was significantly illustrative of a number of aspects, which are very relevant to the life of man today, two of the more important ones being:
1. The regulation of life in akidah (belief).
2. The regulation of life in akhlak (morality).

What the Prophet witnessed during the Israk and Mikraj - the rejoicing of those who fought for the cause of Allah, the reward of Allah for those who liked to give alms and the merit accorded to those who obeyed Allah - served as a lesson for mankind. Also during the blessed journey, the Prophet saw hardships and sufferings afflicting those who disobeyed Allah - those who lived selfishly and whose sole object in life was to satisfy their desires.

What Allah demonstrated served as a sobering reminder to man that the way towards Allah's blessings would always be encumbered by a clash between right and wrong. Those who have been enlightened by the event of Israk and Mikraj are indeed fortunate, in the same way that those who regard the event as mere history, and nothing more, have much to lose.

As we commemorate the event of Israk and Mikraj, a matter that immediately and invariably comes to mind is Allah's command to the Prophet for all believers to say five prayers daily. These five daily prayers were Allah's gift to us in that through prayers we are able to communicate with Him and bring ourselves close to Him. Therefore, it is only proper that during these brief daily moments of our being close to Allah, we submit ourselves totally to Him and divorce ourselves completely from all material things and worldly desires, so as to savour and cherish the sense of being in His presence. That, in essence, is the definition of Mikraj which every Muslim must maintain during prayers.

Muhammad S.A.W.

Why did prophet Muhammad (S.A.W) marry many wives, and who were they, their names and brief background on each one of them (may Allah bless them all)?

When people hear that the prophet had many wives they conclude without much thought that the prophet was a sensuous man. However, a quick historical review of his marriages, proves otherwise. When he was twenty-five years old he married for the first time. His wife, Khadijah, was fifteen years older than he. She remained the only wife of the prophet for the next twenty-five years, until she died (may Allah be pleased with her).

Only after her death, did the prophet marry other women. Now, it is obvious that if the prophet was after physical pleasure he did not have to wait until he was more than fifty years old to start marrying more wives. He lived in a society in which it was quite acceptable to have many wives. But the prophet remained devoted to his only wife for twenty-five years. When she died she was sixty-five years old.

His later marriages were for various reasons. Some marriages were with the view to help the women whose husbands had been killed while they were defending their faith. Others were with a view to cement relationships with devoted followers like Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him. Yet others were to build bridges with various tribes who were otherwise at war with the Muslims. When the prophet became their relative through marriage, their hostilities calmed down, and much bloodshed was averted. Recent non-Muslim writers who had the opportunity to study the life of the prophet first-hand reach a similar conclusion about his plural marriages.

John L. Esposito, Professor of Religion and Director of the Centre for International Studies at the College of the Holy Cross, says that most of these marriages had “political and social motives” (Islam: The Straight Path, Oxford University Press, 1988, p. 19). This he explained as follows: “As was customary for Arab chiefs, many were political marriages to cement alliances. Others were marriages to the widows of his companions who had fallen in combat and were in need of protection” (John L. Esposito, Islam: The Straight Path, pp. 19-20). Esposito reminds us of the following historical fact: “Though less common, polygyny was also permitted in biblical and even in postbiblical Judaism. From Abraham, David, and Solomon down to the reformation period, polygyny was practiced” (p. 19).

Another non-Muslim Caesar E. Farah writes as follows: “In the prime of his youth and adult years Muhammad remained thoroughly devoted to Khadijah and would have none other for consort. This was an age that looked upon plural marriages with favor and in a society that in pre-Biblical and post-Biblical days considered polygamy an essential feature of social existence. David had six wives and numerous concubines (2 Samuel 5:13; 1 Chronicles 3:1-9, 14:3) and Solomon was said to have had as many as 700 wives and 300 concubines (1 Kings 11:3). Solomon’s son Rehoboam had 18 wives and 60 concubines (2 Chronicles 11:21). The New Testament contains no specific injunction against plural marriages. It was commonplace for the nobility among the Christians and Jews to contract plural marriages. Luther spoke of it with toleration” (Caesar E. Farah, Islam: Beliefs and Observances, 4th edition, Barron’s, U.S. 1987, p. 69). Caesar Farah then concluded that Muhammad’s plural marriages were due “partly to political reasons and partly to his concern for the wives of his companions who had fallen in battle defending the nascent Islamic community” (p. 69).

1. KHADIJAH:
She was 40 years old when she proposed to marry the Prophet when he was 25 years old. After 15years of their marriage he became a prophet. She had been married twice before she married Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W.). Her first husband was Aby Haleh Al Tamemy and her second husband was Oteaq Almakzomy. They had both died leaving Khadijah a widower. Khadijah died in 621A.D. This was the same year the Prophet ascended into heaven (Meraj).

2. SAWDA BINT ZAM’A:
Her first husband was Al Sakran Ibn Omro Ibn Abed Shamz. He died within a few days after his return from Ethiopia. She was 65 years old, poor, and had no one to care for her. This was why Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W.) married her.

3. AISHA SIDDIQA:
A woman named Kholeah Bint Hakeem suggested that Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W.) marry Aishah, the daughter of Aby Bakr, to form a close relationship with Aby Bakr’s family. She was already engaged to Jober Ibn Al Moteam Ibn Oday. At this time Jober was not yet a Muslim. The people of Makkah did not object to Aishah becoming married because although she was young, she was mature enough to understand the responsibility of marriage. Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W.) was engaged to Aishah for 2 years before he married her. Aby Bakr was the first leader after Prophet Muhammad’s (S.A.W.) death.

4. HAFSAH BINT U’MAR:
She was the daughter of Omar, the second Calipha. Omar asked Othman to marry Hafsah. Othman refused because his wife had recently died and Othman did not want to remarry. Omar then went to Aby Bakr but he also refused to marry Hafsah. Aby Bakr knew that the Prophet had already considered marrying Hafsah. Omar then went to Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W.) and complained that Othman and Aby Bakr did not want to marry his daughter. The Prophet told Omar that his daughter will marry and Othman will also remarry. Othman married the daughter of Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W.), Om Kolthoom, and Hafsah married the Prophet. This made Omar and Othman both happy.

5. ZAYNAB BINT KHUZAYMA:
Her husband died in the battle of Uhud, leaving her poor and with several children. She was old when Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W.) married her. She died 3 months after she married the Prophet 625 A.D.

6. SALAMA BINT UMAYYA:
Her husband, Abud Allah Abud Al Assad Ibn Al Mogherah, died leaving Hend poor and with many children. Hend was at least 65 years old at the time. Aby Bakr and several others asked her to marry them, but because she loved her husband very much, she refused the marriage’s offers. But finally she accepted Prophet Muhammad’s offer to marry her and take care of her children.

7. ZAYNAB BINT JAHSH:
She was the daughter of Prophet Muhammad’s aunt, Omameh Bint Abud Almutaleb. The Prophet arranged for Zaynab to marry Zayed Ibn Hareathah Al Kalby. This marriage did not last and the Prophet received a verse in the Quran which stated that if they became divorced, then the Prophet must marry Zaynab (Sura 33:37).

8. JUWAYRIYA BINT AL-HARITH:
Her first husband’s name was Masafeah Ibn Safuan. Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W.) wanted Juayreah’s tribe (Beni Al Mostalag)to convert to Islam. Juayreah became a prisoner after the Muslims won the Battle of Al Mostalaq. Juayreah’s father came to the Prophet and offered a payment for her return. The Prophet asked her father to give her a choice. When she was given a choice she said she accepted Islam and Prophet Muhammad as the last God’s Messenger. The Prophet then married her. Her tribe of Beni Almostalag accepted Islam.

9. SAFIYYA BINT HUYAYY:
She was from the tribe of Beni Nadir, who were from the children of Levi (Israel). She was married twice before, then she married Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W.). Her first husband Salam Ibn Moshkem, and her second husband was Kenanah Ibn Al Rabeeah.

10. UMMU HABIBA BINT SUFYAN:
Her first husband was Aubed Allah Jahish. He was the son of the aunt of Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W.). Aubed Allah died in Ethiopia. The king of Ethiopia arranged the marriage of Ramelah to Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W.).

11. MAYAMUNA BINT AL-HARITH:
She was 26years old when she married Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W.). Her first husband was Abu Rahma Ibn Abed Alzey. When the Prophet opened Makkah in 630 AD , she came to the Prophet, accepted Islam and proposed to marry him. Her actions encouraged Many Makkahans to accept Islam and Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W.).

12. MARIA AL-QABTIYYA:
She was sent to Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W.) as a hand maid servant from the king of Egypt. Maria had a son from the Prophet. His name was Ibrahim.

Herpes Zoster

I came back home two hours ago after accompanying the person I loved most to the clinic.

She called me in the morning complaining of her back pain and asked if I would accompany her to the clinic later in that evening. Actually, I was asking her about the flu that she was suffering from for the past few days but I got updated about a new illness or pain that had arisen.

We met at 8.45pm and while walking to the clinic, she informed me that some rashes had appeared on her midriff.

I enquired if she had taken something that she is allergic from but the answer was a negative. We thought that it could have been the weather, afterall .... she is under the weather.

By 9.30pm, she appeared from the consultation room, walking slowly with a sad face towards me. A piece of paper can be seen in her left palm and on it was scrawled 'herpes zoster'.

She blurted out that she has chicken pox and that was the medical term.

After much deliberations and concerned looks from us, the doctor came out to the receptionist counter explaining to us about herpes zoster.

Okay, I'm going to cheat.

This is what I found out about herpes zoster --

How common?
Almost 100% of UK population by adulthood. However in tropical countries the rates are much lower.

How is it caught?
Chickenpox is caught like flu: virus floats in the air, from the breath of an infected person. When it returns it is called shingles. No one can catch shingles, but if you have not had chickenpox and you have skin contact with shingles, you can catch chickenpox.

How long before it appears (incubation period)?
Two weeks is usual, but it could be as soon as 7 days or as long as 23 days.

What does it cause?
A flu-like illness followed by blisters over the body. If it recurs, as shingles, the blisters will be a restricted area, often around the ribs. Older people may develop post-herpetic neuralgia, a pain the nerves that may be severe and may last for months or year. See our pages on how this is treated.

Now I realise how very painful this illness is for her because it hits the nerves and the pain can go on for months. She's having back problem and won't be able to sleep comfortably.

I pray for her to regain her health in godspeed. Ameen.

Everyone's A Cracked Pot.

An elderly woman had two large pots. Each hung on one end of a pole that she carried across the back of her neck.

One of the pots had a crack in it and always ended up being only half-full of water when she arrived home.

This went on for two years, with the woman taking home only one and a half pots of water every day.

One day, the cracked pot, ashamed of its imperfection, decided to speak to the woman.

"I am ashamed of myself, of this crack of mine that causes water to leak."

But the old woman replied:

"Did you notice that there are flowers on your side of the path, but not on the other pot's side?"

"I planted seeds on your side of the path and every day, while we walked back, you watered them."

"I have been able to pick those beautiful flowers to decorate the table because of you."

The point of the story?

Everyone has a flaw.
You have to take people for what they are and look for the good in them.

Based on Guy Ghazali’s poem “Kerana Kita Adalah Satu” (Because We Are One), this production features a team of youth performers who have been practising community performing arts through the People’s Association, led by Artistic Director Mohd Fared Jainal, Mendaki’s Goh Chok Tong Youth Promise Award recipient.

With its engaging performers and dynamic luminaries, powerful musical soundtrack and impressive stage set, Gentarasa 2007 – Titisan Cacamerba is a moving account of Singapore’s Malay community.

Gentarasa 2007 Press Conference.
A press conference was held at the Peoples' Association on 24th May. Members of the press were present while Prof Dr.Yaacob Ibrahim, Minister of Environment & Water Resources, Minister in Charge of Muslim Affairs gave his speech.

Chairman of Ci Yuan CC MAEC, Mr. Ahmad Abdul Majid was next to provide insights of Gentarasa 2007.

After the speeches, we were given a sneak preview of Scene 2 and the finale.
Those dancers were good. The dialogues were humorous. It's a mixture of old and new Singapore with a slight risk on anachronism.

I salute the Artistic Director and his members for daring to stage such a play. You need an open mind to realise what the message is really about.

Read the poem of Guy Ghazali thoroughly and do not close your mind.

After the brief preview of the performance, members of the press started to interview the dancers.

With this post I would like to express my appreciation for all the SMSes I received from my friends who heard the news even though it was to be kept within my office until the official announcement in the media.

Yes, I've lost my job together with the rest of my colleagues and my boss.

Despite the hush hush, there were a few who managed to sneak a message to my mobile and I had to keep quiet and ignore their messages. Sorry, my friends.

So now since it is confirmed, let me say thank you to all who have been giving me inspiration and encouragement to carry on --

The Dance Floor.

My congratulations to the winners of The Dance Floor, Singapore's version of Now You Can Dance
-- namely Vas & Pris.

Seriously, I am not an avid follower of this competition the reason being that, on the very first time it was aired live over Channel 5, I had already visualised how the Singaporean voters would sms their votes ---> towards Vas & Pris.

Yeah, they are good dancers but somehow, by that one viewing, I gathered that Singaporeans would be voting for this loveable and skilful dancing couple.

True enough, halfway during the final, poll statistics showed that Val & Pris were ahead of the other finalists.

I disagree and do not like the idea of Mediacorp displaying the voting statistics halfway during the show. This would encourage viewers to vote due to the popularity of the participants instead of according to their talents in dancing.

Val & Pris would have been jeopardised of their number one spot if voters vote irresponsibly.

If I were a bookie, this revelation of how the votes stand halfway during the show would increase the odds.

Anyway, I did not really watch the finals of The Dance Floor as I needed my rest.

I was sure and confident that Vas & Pris would be the champion that night and they surely did.

You Are My Sunshine, My Only Sunshine.

It was last Thursday evening that we met and after dinner, we strolled to a nearby theater, having no idea which movie to watch.

Somehow, when we reached the ticket counter, the trailer of Sunshine appeared on the big plasma screen. The good visual and special effects along with the mystery involved made us decide to watch the movie.

It is 2057 and eight scientists of men and women are being sent on a mission to the Sun, to save our ailing star from imminent death.

The only way to save the sun is to send a bomb the size of Manhattan Island into the sun via their spaceship Icarus II. If you study Greek Mythology, you will realise that anything to do with the universe is named after a greek god -- Apollo, Mercury, Jupiter, Pluto etc.

Icarus is the Greek character that flew too close to the sun and his wings melted causing him to plunge to his death. So now you roughly know what happened to Icarus I, the first spacecraft on the same mission 7 years prior to this. It had mysteriously vanished.

But please note that the mission for Icarus II is not to search nor salvage Icarus I but to safe the future of Mankind by saving the sun.

I laughed at the plot of saving the sun. In my unscientific mind, I was yelling to the crew, "Do you know how big the Sun is? Even a nuclear bomb the size of our Earth will not affect the sun. On the other hand, the Sun's small flare burst can dehydrate the Earth within seconds."

Plot aside, I decided to just let go and enjoy the movie. It's going to be a mystery, isn't it?

The mission went smoothly until they were within the point of no return. The point where they lose communication contact with Mother Earth.

In the loneliness of Space travel, there was a sense of belonging when Mercury was seen orbiting the Sun.

And in that loneliness and sense of belonging, a familiar stress signal was detected. It was from Icarus I, the ship they thought had been destroyed in the first mission.

Here comes the predictable event. Yes, they decided to divert to Icarus I and get its payload (The Bomb) so that now they have double the chance of exploding the Sun from the inside.

Watch the movie and enjoy the mystery. How did they manage to fly from one spacecraft to another without a spacesuit? Yes, you can hold your breath for that 15 seconds or yes, you can withstand that minus 35 degrees for a moment. But looks like the producer had forgotten about air-pressure! Your lungs will explode once you fly through a vacuum.

The scientists were jettisoned into space -- one with a spacesuit but two without!!! They must have come not from Earth but from the planet Krypton.

I solved the mystery of how a fifth being managed to enter Icarus II.
Took me two puzzling hours after I reached home to realise the answer.

It was a good movie.
There was mystery and suspense but with predictable ending.

The night at the movie brought me a smile.

Baby,

A Good Friday.

Yesterday was a Public Holiday as it was Good Friday. As I hurried myself to the mosque for the Friday prayers, I saw a sight that made me proud.

There were groups of people all dressed up in different colours from everywhere walking towards a common destination. You can see fathers walking with their sons and you know that they are family by the way they were dressed in similar colours and fashion.

The crowd from all over Tampines streamlined towards Darul Ghufran Mosque and in my heart I felt like the Eid reenacting before my very eyes. I remembered my ustaz telling us that Friday is a day of celebration for Muslims and yes I do feel the celebration at that moment.

The mosque was filled with eager worshippers and fortunately I managed to squeeze in between two pakciks (uncles). I had subconsciously told myself "Now if this pakcik can just move to the left and the other pakcik move a little bit to the right, I can get a place to pray on the 4th row (saf) between them."

Positive thinking does have positive effects because as soon as I stood between them, they gave me space, actually more space than I had anticipated and I performed the two raka'ats of Solaatul Tahiyyatul Masjid in comfort.

My eyes caught sight of a two-seater sofa placed in the vicinity of the mimbar. Surely the imam is not going to sit there during his sermon, would he? He surely did not.

The two-seater was for a forum that would take place after the Friday prayers at 2.15pm in conjuction with the celebration of Maulidur Rasul.

I stayed behind although this was unplanned, fighting the hunger pangs that attacked me. It was my fault for skipping breakfast and the last food intake was somewhere at Bras Basah Road on a Thursday evening with my special someone. It was her birthday week and she deserved all the attention I gave her.

Anyway, the forum was about the life of the last Messenger, Muhammad S.A.W. and the speaker was Ustaz Jamaluddin Abdul Wahab, the Chief Imam of Masjid Darul Ghufran.

12 Rabiul Awal
He started the speech about the significance of the date 12 Rabiul Awal in Islam.

He stressed that 12 Rabiul Awal should be remembered not only about the birth of the Prophet but about the death of the Prophet as well.

It is common for people to think of pleasant things and try to forget things that saddened them. A child cries alone while the world laughs when he is being born but that very child will laugh alone while the whole world cries when he leaves for the Hereafter.

There were many sources of how Muhammad S.A.W. was born and the event that lead to him being born in Mecca. Not all the sources can be taken as some sources are erroneous.

It was confirmed that Muhammad was born in the year the elephants attacked the Ka'aba. It was also confirmed that Muhammad was born in the month of Rabiul Awal of that year. These two facts are agreed by Muslim scholars.

They somehow differ in their opinions of on the date of birth. One group says 9 Rabiul Awal and another group says 12 Rabiul Awal.

Ustaz Jamaluddin pointed out that whatever it is, we are celebrating the Maulid in the month of Rabiul Awal and if it so happens on the 9th or the 12th, it should not affect anybody since no miracle will happen or take place.

On the contrary, 12 Rabiul Awal is the date Muhammad S.A.W. died and everybody agrees about this. Henceforth, that date should be more significantly remembered as the day our Prophet returned to Allah.

The Day Rasulullah Died.
Ustaz Jamaluddin narrated the reactions of the Sahabahs when Muhammad S.A.W. passed away.

At that time, Muhammad's S.A.W. father-in-law and best friend, Abu Bakar As-Siddiq r.a. was not near him. Abu Bakar r.a. was an emotional man and he loved the Prophet S.A.W. very much. He cannot bear to see his loved one on his last breath so Abu Bakar r.a. stayed away and waited from a distance.

Omar Al-Khattab r.a. upon hearing the death of the Prophet got emotional and could not believe his ears. He rushed to the commotion the gathering crowd had made and announced that whoever said that Muhammad S.A.W. has died will receive what he was holding. He had slightly unsheathed his sword threatening to kill anyone who said that the beloved Rasul S.A.W. had passed away.

Ustaz Jamaluddin while chronicling this event stressed that Omar Al-Khattab was the most feared by all. The Roman Empire would have shivered upon hearing his anger. Even Shaitaan is afraid of Omar Al-Khattab r.a.

Omar Al-Khattab r.a. need not unsheath his sword, he need not use a sword to threaten anybody. Even if he had used a spoon and pointed at the crowd, he would still pose a threat and strike fear to them. His angry voice sufficed to bring fear to those around.

Omar Al-Khattab r.a. was really grief-stricken. Who would be able to control him? Nobody else but Abu Bakar As-Siddiq r.a.

Abu Bakar As-Siddiq r.a. was called right after the Prophet passed away and he witnessed Omar Al-Khattab's anger.

He spoke to the crowd, " Whoso worshippeth Muhammad, let him know that Muhammad is dead; but whoso worshippeth Allah, let him know that Allah liveth and dieth not." So saying, he recited certain verses from the Quran, which no doubt had long dwelt upon his mind, as signifying that Muhammad was mortal and would die as other Prophets had died before him.

Recognising the sacred words to bear a meaning that had never struck him before, Omar Al-Khattab r.a. was speechless. "My limbs trembled," he would say when speaking of that memorable hour, "and I knew of a certainty that Muhammad was dead indeed." His iman had overpowered his anger!

Love for the Prophet Muhammad S.A.W.
Ustaz Jamaluddin talked about how we should show our love for the last Messenger of Allah.

1. SIDQ
As a muslim, we should believe in whatever the Prophet tells us. Muhammad S.A.W. as a young boy prior to his prophethood was a trustworthy person. He does not tell a lie. Everybody trusted him and believed in him. Allah had made the prophet such that he was of a respectable character from a respectable Quraish tribe in the Arab community.

When Muhammad S.A.W. told the muslim community that he had experienced "Israk Mi'raj" a journey that made him travel from Mecca to Baitul Maqdis and then from the Earth to the 7th level of Heaven during the night, the loyalty of the muslims were tested.

Some would think that Muhammad S.A.W. was insane knowing very well that he does not tell a lie. Abu Lahab took advantage of this situation to spread doubts amongst the Muslims.

When Abu Bakar r.a. who was away, heard about this through another sahabah, he confessed that "If Muhammad S.A.W. said so then it is true and I believed him!"

The irony was that Abu Bakar r.a. was not even there when Muhammad S.A.W. announced about his extra-ordinary journey but for the love of the Prophet, he believed without a second thought.

This act of acknowledging the truth about what Muhammad S.A.W. had said, earned Abu Bakar the title of As-Siddiq and as of that day he was known as Abu Bakar As-Siddiq.

2. Do Whatever The Prophet S.A.W. Tells You To Do.
When Muhammad S.A.W. announced that all the women had to cover their hair, this was done immediately. The women had no time to go shopping to buy scarves and most of them are poor.

For the love of the Prophet, they covered their heads with fragments of cloth sewn together to form a scarf. It was ugly but it served it's purpose. Even Aishah r.a. commented to the Prophet that the women looked as if they had crows sitting on their heads.

My eyes started tearing when this was told. Oh how strong the iman of those women that they did not care how ugly or ridiculous they look, just to please their love for the Prophet and Allah.

3. Refrain From What The Prophet S.A.W. Forbade Us.
When the Prophet announced the total prohibition of alcohol consumption, the muslim community who regarded drinking alcohol as drinking tea, did not reluctantly but willingly destroyed all containers and bottles of alcohol. That day, the Prophet had announced that the consumption of alcohol is Haram, that day, the pathways were wet with alcohol. This was done immediately for the love of the Messenger of Allah.

4. Do As How Muhammad S.A.W. Had Done It.
Ustaz Jamaluddin gave this last point and related to us the story of three sahabahs.

There were three sahabahs who told each other what they intended to do to increase their Iman. One of them said that he would fast the whole year non-stop. One of them said that he would not sleep at all and another said that he would not get married but devote his life to Allah.

Muhammad S.A.W. overheard this and considered this an urgent matter. In his feeble health, he ambled to the three sahabahs and confirmed to them what he had just overheard. After they had spoken that Muhammad S.A.W. had not heard wrongly, Muhammad said.

"I am the one person who loves Allah so dearly and I am his Rasul. There were days that I do not fast. I sleep at night and I got married. Do not do things that I do not do. Do as I do."

This statement has great implications. There were times when one would do ibadah thinking without checking that this was how Muhammad S.A.W. had done it. Unfortunately, I am one of them. It struck a blow on me and served as a wake-up call.

Celebrating Maulidur Rasul.
Ustaz Jamaluddin clarified about the celebration of the birth of our beloved Prophet S.A.W. This was not done during the lifetime of Muahmmad S.A.W. nor during the sahabah's time.

Some scholars considered this a Bid'ah. Here Ustaz Jamaluddin had to use Qiyas, the use of an event that somehow shows the celebration is allowed.

When Muhammad S.A.W. asked his Jew friends why they fast on the 10th of Muharram as he had been observing them to do so for the past years, he was told that it was because on that day Moses was freed from the evil Pharoah. The jews fasted to commemorate the joyful event.

Muhammad S.A.W. then said, "In that case, I have more rights to celebrate such an event since Moses was a phrophet of Islam, like me. I shall fast today and tomorrow. Next year, I shall fast the day before, the actual day and the day after!"

In another instance, Muhammad S.A.W. was asked why he fasted on Mondays and Thursdays. He replied that he was born on a Monday therefore he fasted on Mondays.

These two events showed that the Prophet celebrated to remind him of joyous occasions.

Henceforth, we celebrate Maulidur Rasul to commemorate the birth of Muhammad S.A.W. so as not to stray from the path of Islam.

I've been listening to this song on the radio in the wee early morning in my office for the past few months. The DJ had either forgotten to inform us what is the title and singer of the song or he assumed that we know or I must have dozed off when he revealed the information.

Anyway, it recently appeared back in my life haunting me with the ever repetitive lovely notes that pierced through my heart when the chorus comes about.

Special thanks to that special someone who happened to let me listen to her i-pod, I eventually found out what I wanted.

Yeah ... the song's haunting me now and the event leading to this brings me pleasant memories about us.

My message to that special someone is seen written in the last segment of the video!

Flesh-Eating Bug!

I received the following email on 22 March 2007 through the office colleague. Thinking that it was a farce I ignored it but my mind changed until I saw an article in the New Paper about the flesh-eating bug!

The email that I received --

Dear Colleagues & Friends,

My family and I would like to thank each and everyone of you for your generous contributions and heartfelt condolences showered on us during the bereavement of our father.

I would also like to take this opportunity to caution all to be aware that you must consult the doctor immediately if you are injured by any crabs and developed such symptoms: vomiting, diarrhea, nausea, fever and slight swelling of the wound. This is to ensure you do not become another victim of the Flesh Eating Bugs.

Enclosed are the events of what had happened to my father.

My father was pricked by the crabs (bought from .- a well known supermkt....) while washingthem at about 11am on 22nd Feb 07.

He was fine until mid-night when he became ill with vomiting, diarrhea, nausea, fever and swelling of the wound.

As he was still conscious, he did not want to go to the hospital for treatment. At about 6 am, he became semi-conscious and we called for the ambulance to send him to the hospital.

When the paramedic arrived, they advised that he is in very critical condition as his heart beats were irregular and his blood pressure had dropped to very low or critical condition.

He was immediately sent to the nearest hospital (NUH) where the doctor stabilized his condition and immediately operates his hand to try and remove the infection which has traveled up to his elbow.

During the operation, the doctors came back to us and advised that he was infected by the Flesh Eating Bugs and they were unable to remove them. They advised that they need to amputate his hand from the elbow to remove the source of the infection to give him a surviving chance.

After the amputation, he was sent to the ICU for observation. His condition was stable but no improvement was seen.

Next morning, 24th Feb 07, the doctors called us back and informed that my father will go anytime and nothing can be done to improve his condition as he was already on maximum dosage of the drugs.

The doctors also suggested that we reduce the dosage to let him try on his own to live or go quickly and reduce his sufferings.

He died peacefully half hour after the drugs were reduced in the afternoon.

THEY were strange words. But they were a sign that all was not well with Mr Tan Boon Hock.

The words, which were uttered to his daughter, also turned out to be his last.

Mr Tan, 83, died from a 'flesh-eating bug' after a crab nicked him with its pincers.

The rare bacteria had entered his body through the wound. Despite a last-ditch effort by doctors to save him by amputating his arm, the elderly man died within two days.

Tragedy and pain were far from everyone's minds when his brother-in-law visited the family at their four-room HDB flat on the fourth day of Chinese New Year and gave them live crabs.

Mr Tan's daughter, Ms Mary Tan, 47, said: 'Everyone in our family loves crabs'.

The childcare teacher added that her uncle loves to give them live crabs whenever he visits them.

That day, he had bought the crabs from a neighbourhood supermarket.

Mr Tan's wife, Madam Sit Ong Kee, told The New Paper that as she was not home, her husband decided to steam the crabs the next day.

Madam Sit, 83, said it was always her husband's job to clean the crabs as she did not know how to do it.

Ms Tan recalled: 'My dad and mum ate the crabs in the afternoon and he saved one for me when I went home for dinner that night.

'My dad then showed me a plaster at the back of his left palm.

'He told me that he was wounded by a crab while cleaning it. He looked fine and it did not cross my mind that the wound could be fatal.

'My dad did not suffer from high blood pressure or diabetes. I'm still shocked by his accident.'

That day after eating the crabs, at around midnight, Mr Tan started throwing up and had diarrhoea more than five times, Madam Sit said.

'He became very weak and I stayed up the whole night to look after him,' she said in Hokkien.

'His legs were very weak and I had to take him to the toilet many times.'

At 1am, Madam Sit woke her daughter, who was sleeping in the next room.

Ms Tan said: 'By 3am, my dad was too weak to go to the toilet.

'We just let him pass motion on his bed. He could still talk and said that he did not want to go to the hospital.'

It did not occur to Ms Tan that her dad's condition was critical and would eventually become fatal.

Ms Tan, who lives with her parents in the flat, recalled the last thing her dad told her: 'He said to me in Hokkien that all the worms inside him must come out.

'I thought that was strange.'

Ms Tan and her mother had thought that Mr Tan was suffering from food poisoning.

By 6am, the next day, Madam Sit was exhausted from looking after her husband.

She then called her fourth child and only son, MrTan Aik Cheng, for help.

The younger Mr Tan, 50, an engineer, said: 'I told my younger sister, who lives with my parents, to call for an ambulance.

'When I arrived at my parents' flat, the paramedics told me that my dad was in critical condition. His blood pressure was dropping rapidly and his heartbeat was irregular.'

The elder Mr Tan was admitted to National University Hospital (NUH) on 23Feb.

His son said: 'Doctors at NUH told me that my dad was attacked by a flesh-eating disease and the infection had travelled from his hand to his elbow.

'My dad's arm had to be amputated to prevent the flesh-eating bacteria from spreading further. It was his only chance to survive.

'But even so, he did not make it.'

The elder Mr Tan died the following afternoon in the intensive care unit.

All his nine children and 14 grandchildren were by his bedside when he died. His son said: 'My dad's eyes were closed.

'But we whispered into his ear and we saw tears flowing from his eyes. We believe he heard us. Then he left us.'

Mr Tan described his dad as a simple man who led a simple life.

'At his old age, he stayed home most of the time.'

He would spend his time watching TV and sleeping.

Madam Sit said she is deeply saddened by her husband's death, but said that the incident would not put her off crabs.

Mr Tan said: 'It was a rare accident.

'We won't stop eating crabs.

'But we want to warn others to be careful when cleaning crabs.'

Scientists have discovered how a type of flesh-eating bug disables a key part of the body's immune system.

Muscle infected with the strep bacteria

A team from Hammersmith Hospitals NHS Trust looked at why the streptococcus A bacteria can be deadly in some cases.

It causes conditions ranging from mild throat infections to the flesh-eating bug necrotising fasciitis.

The Hammersmith team found group A strep can destroy a key immune system messenger which should alert the body to the bacteria's presence.

Many people carry the bacteria harmlessly on their skin and in their nose and throat.

But it can cause severe bloodstream infections, toxic shock syndrome - and necrotising fasciitis.

Over 2,000 cases of invasive disease caused by strep A are reported every year. Up to one in five patients die, if the bacteria get into the blood.

'Shooting the messenger'

The team's research began when a patient admitted to the hospital died from necrotising fasciitis, caused by a very virulent form of strep A.

Experts looked at post mortem samples from the patient and found that, despite the presence of the bacteria in muscle tissue, there were hardly any white blood cells, which would normally be the body's first line of defence.

The strain affecting the patient was isolated and grown in the lab, and biochemical analysis found that the bacteria prevented the immune system responding as normal by "shooting the messenger".

The bacteria interacts with a molecule called IL-8 which should act as the messenger to rally other parts of the immune system to attack the "invader".
But these messages are blocked, meaning the bacteria is unchecked.

The researchers then looked closely at its make-up.

They found a particular piece on the surface of the bacteria, which they have called SpyCEP, is responsible for blocking the action of IL-8.

Strains of strep A with the highest levels of SpyCEP were most effective at inhibiting the body's immune response.

Dr Shiranee Sriskandan, who led the research, said the finding was important because more analysis of the SpyCEP fragment could help in the development of a vaccine against strep A.

She said: "There is currently no vaccine against all types of group A strep.
"We are hopeful that this is the first step to developing one that is broadly effective and safe."

Professor Ron Cutler, an infectious diseases expert at the University of East London, said: "This is an exciting finding."

He added: "It's a very technical finding, but we could potentially have a vaccine against streptococcus necrotising fasciitis."

Professor Cutler said much more research was needed to develop any vaccine and to see how effective it could be, and who should be receive it.

The research has been published in the Journal of Infectious Diseases.

Singaporeans like to eat chilli crabs. This blog is not to hinder anyone from eating such seafood delicacies.

You may eat them. The flesh-eating bugs are not only found in crustaceans.

If you cook your food properly, you need not worry.

Just take more precautions when preparing the dishes.
